Officer Controversy
KSAT TV
11/07/2018
This two-part series, which aired in November 2018, revealed that a Seguin Police Department officer was allowed to stay on the force despite giving a courtesy ride to a disoriented man who then walked into traffic on Interstate 10 and was hit by at least four vehicles, killing him. Autopsy and toxicology records obtained by our investigative unit showed that victim Darrin Price had high levels of amphetamines and methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death. The officer, Suzann Gonzalez, was not punished for the incident and we could find no record of her even being investigated for it. Weeks later, Gonzalez used her department issued Taser on a teenager in an unrelated incident. Personnel records for Gonzalez showed that prior to her May 2018 resignation, she was given second chance after second chance despite numerous disciplinary issues and had a penchant for targeting children at scenes, at one point challenging a juvenile to hit her. The impact of the series was swift and forceful. Less than a week after the series aired, the department’s top three officers: its chief, deputy chief and captain, had all resigned or retired. We produced follow up stories as each member of the command staff left the department.
