"A History of Mass Violence"
KXAN-TV
02/25/2020
From 1980 to 2019, Texas experienced at least 32 mass shootings - events with at least three victims. Our investigative team's analysis shows more than 250 people were wounded in those events, and at least 208 were killed. Now, we’ve taken a critical look at that violent history, as state leaders weigh options to prevent future tragedies. Some of their proposals rely heavily on citizens — through advanced training and suspicious activity reporting.
During the four months it took to research and execute this project, we traveled across the state to track down survivors of those shootings to discuss the effectiveness of lawmakers’ proposed solutions. To tell their stories, we also scoured hundreds of public records in person and pored through hours of archive video footage.
This entry includes an on-air special, which is made up of the entire five-part investigative series, expert roundtable analysis and a digital explainer. Along with that main video file, we’ve also uploaded individual audio files for the accompanying five-episode season of our weekly “Catalyst” podcast that’s part of this multi-platform project.
An interactive, digital component can also be found at TexasMassViolence.com. Users will find data features, in-depth “pop-out” extras, an immersive long-form story, and a video/photo timeline of dozens of mass shootings in Texas over the past four decades. Just use the toolbar at the top of that link above to navigate between the multiple pages.
