Readers in South Texas are perhaps some of the most learned when it comes to the intricacies of gun laws and the Second Amendment.

Part of that is due to the work of Corpus Christi Caller-Times reporters Beatriz Alvarado, Julie Garcia, and John C. Moritz.

In the wake of the Santa Fe school shootings in May, they took on the challenge of researching measures that state and federal officials were taking to close loopholes in background checks and to keep firearms out the hands of the mentally ill.

Through their reporting, our audience learned the governor was considering measures such as installing more campus marshals at schools. Proposals to step up efforts to arm teachers, particularly in more rural districts, were unearthed thanks to their journalistic curiosity.
