“Drive Alive: Austin’s Drinking Problem”

Austin has a drinking problem. We’ve witnessed it firsthand in the stories we cover. With one of the largest universities in our backyard, a growing population and a culture of music it’s leading to deadly consequences. We decided to take the lead and do stories that get to the heart of the issue. We started by pointing out the problems, then followed up with some real life consequences of drinking and driving. As a result, our stories helped get one of the biggest DWI offenders off the streets and compelled a local court to change the way judges receive defendants’ criminal histories. Two of our stories featuring the young DWI survivors will also now be featured across the state in Boy Scouts of America meetings in hopes of educating teen drivers early. MADD also recognized KVUE for our work on the #DriveAliveAustin campaign.
