2022 Star Photojournalist: Sam Owens

Sam Owens, a staff photojournalist for the San Antonio Express-News, won this year’s Charles E. Green Award for Star Photojournalist of the Year.

Her most recent work for the Express-News included breaking news and long-term coverage of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

“I was looking for a way to connect deeply with victims’ families and also with the community at large,” Owens said. She went to community events and met with families to build trust so that they could become comfortable with her presence.
