Hard Digging Uncovers Old Pipes

The Investigative team of KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas picked up the trail in the aftermath of a fatal gas line explosion, systematically uncovering evidence of a long-recognized but little-known problem: obsolete and degraded cast-iron natural gas pipes threading under the surface of many Austin neighborhoods. KVUE’s lead reporter on the story, Kelly Gruca, visits with Headliners Foundation interviewer Neal Spelce about the extended coverage, which led to to the 2013 Charles Green award for Best Investigative Report for Television.
