“Racial Profiling Whitewash”

This KXAN investigation uncovered the Texas Department of Public Safety and Austin Police Department wrongly recording the race of minority motorists during traffic stops and skewing the accuracy of data used for racial profiling reports in violation of state law. KXAN analyzed traffic stop data from the past five years for both law enforcement agencies and found significantly large numbers of minorities, mostly Hispanic, being reported as white, in violation of the Texas racial profiling law. The investigation prompted action by state lawmakers and triggered audits and policy changes within both agencies.
