Judge’s Comments:

While all media faced enormous personal and professional challenges reporting a story they also were living through, the Chronicle’s breaking-news coverage of hurricane Harvey delivered at an extraordinary level. Its compelling photography, graphics, writing and presentation documented both the storm’s enormity and its singular impact. Print and online readers were well-informed about what was happening to their region and their neighbors, and those checking in from elsewhere around the world were transported to the middle of the devastation on the ground (and water) in ways only a well-deployed and coordinated local team can report such a big story. Throughout the coverage, there was a constant thread of humanity that avoided the cliche, and reminded folks what great breaking news coverage looks like.
