"Uvalde School Massacre"

Recipient of the Best Breaking News Coverage by a Television Station award in The Charles E. Green Awards (2022)

KPRC-TV

Judge’s Comments:

Breaking news coverage is not about which news organization gets to the scene first. I believe the most important element of covering a breaking story is to make sure the journalists on the scene are able to gather information, verify it quickly and deliver the facts most important for their viewers to know.  KPRC’s news team did an excellent job of managing their staff to cover the rapidly developing story and its many components.

The Uvalde School Shooting required determination, tenacity and compassion by the KPRC news team. Given the numerous locations, the many agencies on scene, and the devastating details, KPRC reporters, photographers, editors and producers stacked their newscasts with the newest information at the top so viewers stayed informed. Their investigative unit was outstanding in the way information was gathered about the victims, shooter and the police response to the brutal massacre of the children and their teacher.

I have covered many breaking news stories which included the deaths of children. It is never easy. I applaud the reporters and photographers on the scene for their delicate handling of the families including the interview with a student who was in the room where it happened. I believe it is important for viewers to see and hear a reporter’s emotions as it lets people know that journalists are human, too
