Judge’s Comments:

While most of the stories in this category seemed like broadcast or print stories with some added digital features, “Held Back” was a digitally-focused story that incorporated a podcast. In other words, “Held Back” was a deeply reported and important story that was told in a compelling digital way.

The thorough narrative seamlessly incorporated video, graphics and photography to pull on the strengths of each form in the spirit of The New York Times’ iconic “Snow Fall.” The podcast, or audio documentary, companion version of the story is also compelling and used some creative storytelling techniques.

“Held Back” tackles an issue of great importance and presents valuable information in an absorbing way. It represents the best ideals of digital journalism.

Many of the other finalists in this category should be applauded for their efforts, and the Houston Chronicle’s “Dexter” children’s box was a wonderfully creative effort.
