The Texas Hill Country stretches across 11 million acres of rolling hills, creeks, rivers and striking rock formations.
Reporter Brian Chasnoff spent 2021 exploring the consequences of rampant development across this fragile landscape. What he found was alarming: Massive stone quarries were polluting waterways and threatening the region’s prime source of drinking water. The aggregates industry was using its political muscle to gain an opening to dredge sand and rock from the Highland Lakes, a Hill Country jewel. And San Antonio officials charged with protecting the city’s tree canopy were enabling its destruction.
