The Dallas Morning News reported in another high-profile story on Parkland Memorial Hospital that federally installed safety monitors determined the hospital violated dozens of government health care standards in recent months. The article “Parkland hospital in Dallas violated more than 50 safety rules, monitors’ report says” by Miles Moffeit and Brooks Egerton detailed how the hospital was refusing to release the report to the public and explained internal bulletins on the subject circulating within the hospital.

The Dallas Morning News analyzed nearly 9 million patient-level records to examine the rate of a number of potentially preventable medical complications in its piece, “Parkland in Dallas has been among Texas’ worst hospitals for patient safety for years, analysis shows” (Oct. 16, 2011). It showed that Parkland Memorial Hospital had been among the state’s worst for a number of years on a broad index of eight different indicators.

The Dallas Morning News broke a strong investigative piece “Perry has deep relationships with his campaign bank, despite bailout money” (Oct. 1, 2011).  The story, by Steve McGonigle and James Drew, documents the relatationship among Gov. Rick Perry, his campaign acccount, and bank officials.  McGonigle and Drew were part of a team that won the 2010-11 Headliners Foundation’s Star Investigative Reporting Award for earlier coverage of Perry’s finances.
