Each year, the Headliners Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding communication students and college journalists attending universities across the state of Texas. 2011-2012 Scholarship Recipients
Jordyn Anders is from Iowa Park, Texas. She is a senior Broadcast Journalism major at Texas Tech University. She has written for Texas Tech’s Daily Toreador, and plans to produce for TexasTechToday.com and the MCTV newscast this spring semester. After she graduates in May, Jordyn plans to attend Texas Tech University School of Law.
Claire Cardona is a print journalism senior and the former managing editor of The Daily Texan. Originally from Singapore, she lived in New Orleans for 10 years before moving to Austin to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Claire has interned at the San Antonio Express-News and Texas Tribune and participated in a month-long foreign correspondents’ workshop in China.
Nick Dean is from Taylor, Texas. He is a senior majoring in Journalism and Political Science at Baylor University. Last year, Nick was the editor-in-chief of The Baylor Lariat, and he earned “Editor of the Year” by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. Last fall, he worked as a reporting intern for The Church of England Newspaper. Dean graduates in May and is pursuing several avenues of post-graduate work.
Ben Freed will graduate in May from the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Middle Eastern Studies. During his time at UT, he published in Sports Illustrated, The Texas Tribune, The Daily Texan, and AnnArbor.com. Additionally, Ben has aired content on NPR’s Austin affiliate, KUT, and on the University’s student-run radio and TV stations, KVRX and TSTV, respectively.
Jordan Gass-Poore’ is from Seguin, Texas. She is a senior English and Mass Communication major at Texas State University. She is the assistant trends editor for The University Star and works for radio station KTSW 89.9 FM; the Austin-based film blog, Slackerwood; and the San Antonio-based boutique public relations firm, LMG Communications. After Jordan graduates in May 2014, she plans to study Journalism at City University in London.
Caitlin Giddens is from Tyler, Texas and is a junior at Baylor University majoring in Journalism and minoring in Creative Writing within the University’s Honor College. Caitlin currently writes feature stories for WACOAN Magazine. She has also worked for her hometown and university newspapers, and the Baylor Yearbook. After graduating in May of 2013, Caitlin hopes to work on staff at a magazine and write about international social issues.
Torrie Hardcastle is a senior at The University of Texas, double-majoring in Magazine Journalism and Radio-Television-Film. Although an Alabama native, she’s fallen in love with UT and Austin, serving as editor-in-chief of UT’s award-winning Orange Magazine, founder and supervising editor of the new Orange Weekly Newsletter, and president of UT’s Magazine Club. Torrie also works as an editorial intern at Austin Monthly Magazine and a contributing writer for The Alclade.
Susannah Jacob is a junior History major at The University of Texas. She has worked as an editorial intern at Vanity Fair and The Texas Tribune, and published articles in The New York Times. She is currently an associate editor at The Daily Texan, where she has worked as an editor and reporter for six semesters.
Holly Kitten, a native of Lubbock, is a senior Journalism major with a minor in Secondary Education and English at Texas Tech University. She will begin her student teaching in the Fall and will graduate in December. In the future, Holly would like to either work for a magazine or communications department, or teach high school journalism.
Nadia Macias is originally from El Paso and is a double major in Multimedia Journalism and Anthropology at The University of Texas at Austin. Nadia is currently working as a media assistant for the Department of Chemical Engineering and she has written for The Horn, an online news outlet for UT Austin students. After graduation, she will pursue a job with a news television or radio station.
Skye Ochoa is a Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations student at The University of Texas at Austin. Originally from El Paso, Skye finds the diverse connections among people on campus and across the city to be interesting. She worked at Texas Student Television as a producer for the award-winning KVR News. She looks forward to graduating this May and pursuing a career in media or communications.
Riannon Rowley was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. She made a decision to attend Texas Tech on a whim and couldn’t be more satisfied with her choice. She is an Electronic Media Communications major with aspirations to work in the sports field of national broadcasting. She will graduate in December 2012 and cannot wait to get started in “real-world” journalism.
Audrey White is a University of Texas at Austin senior enrolled in the Plan II Honors program with an emphasis in Religious Studies and Journalism. Originally from Coppell, Texas, Audrey has been interested in journalism since high school. She is the current managing editor at The Daily Texan and looks forward to her summer internship on the business desk at The Dallas Morning News.
