Showcase Award for Enterprise & Innovation in Journalism

Contest Criteria

This award will recognize outstanding journalism that has made a significant impact on Texas government, public policy or the conduct of a business, non-profit or other organization. Entries will be drawn from material submitted online and selected for display in the Showcase below. Eligible submissions to the Showcase must be from a professional Texas-based news provider—print, broadcast or digital–that distributes at least monthly and that adheres to the highest journalistic principles.

Judges will consider a broad range of journalism including, but not limited to, investigative stories, long-form pieces, series or packages dealing with key issues or breaking news and interactive projects that engage the audience.

Contest Parameters

Entries must be submitted for display in the Showcase section of the Headliners Foundation’s website by qualifying news organizations or reporters, editors and other members of the professional media community. Stories published in 2016 should be submitted by the entry deadline of February 6, 2017.

Submissions must provide an active link to a PDF format or online page that can be publicly accessed without a paywall or registration and which remains active through Dec. 31 of the year following the year of initial publication or broadcast.

The Headliners Foundation Excellence Committee or its appointed representatives will approve any submission for display on the Headliners Foundation website’s Showcase before it is posted and reserves the right to reject submissions based on the guidelines presented here.

Judging and Awards

Winners of the Showcase Award will be announced in the spring of the year following initial publication and will be honored at the Foundation’s Mike Quinn Awards Luncheon in the fall.  These awards will be in addition to the awards presented each year by the foundation in partnership with the Associated Press (AP). Media outlets that take part in the AP competitions are also eligible for the Showcase Award and runners-up prizes, but must enter the Showcase competition separately and comply with the rules of the Showcase Award.

Submitting a 2016 entry for this award is easy:

Entries are being accepted for display in the Showcase section of the Headliners Foundation’s website by qualifying news organizations or reporters, editors and other members of the professional media community for stories whose initial publication or broadcast has been since Jan. 1, 2016.

  • Just send your contact info and a few details with a link to your story or package of stories, videos and other elements via the submission form at this site: http://headlinersfoundation.org/content-submission
  • There is no entry fee.
  • And, the winning entry receives a $2,000 cash prize; runners-up will receive $1,000 each!
  • Entries for stories published or broadcast in 2016 are due by the deadline of February 6, 2017.* You may continue to update your entry if you publish follow-up stories that are evidence of impact of your previous reporting or you discover new information relevant to your original story packages. Bodies of work, including sidebars, multiple stories, multi-media packages and editorials are encouraged, though single stories may be entered as well.  NOTE: Stories published or broadcast in 2015 may be included as part of your 2016 submission to add context to your entry if the 2015-year story represents a major breakthrough or impact – i.e., the story from the current year must be the defining piece of work in your entry, not incremental.
