Since 2010, some 85 dental-related deaths – in both children and adults – have been reported in Texas. Brooks Egerton of The Dallas Morning News interviewed more than 100 sources for his award-winning story, “Deadly Dentistry.” As part of his investigation, Brooks made open records requests in every state in the country, only to learn that many states do not maintain accurate records of patient deaths or do not release them. The Foundation’s Mark Morrison interviews Brooks about his work and the varied and potentially dangerous flaws in the regulation of dentistry from state to state.
